 About The Brain Domain

The Brain Domain is a science communication and engagement website designed to translate complex neuroscience research and concepts to the lay audience.

Neuroscience research affects all of us, however news articles can often be sensationalised, while journal articles are hidden behind paywalls and full of complicated jargon. This makes research findings highly inaccessible. The Brain Domain aims to make this information easier to understand for scientists and non-scientists alike.

Additionally, with the rise of open science, it is becoming increasingly important for early-career researchers to communicate their research to the general public. The Brain Domain provides a platform for young neuroscientists to develop their scientific writing and communication skills, in addition to gaining publicity and acknowledgement for their hard work.

Ok, what do you mean by “neuroscience”?

Neuroscience is a complex and ever-evolving scientific discipline. Broadly speaking, neuroscience is defined as the scientific study of the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex network of nerves (called ‘neurons’) and other cells which together compose the brain and spinal cord – called the central nervous system. The central nervous system sends and recieves signals around the body which controls how we think, how we feel, and how we move about the world. Whilst traditionally thought of as a biological discipline, neuroscience is actually highly multidisciplinary, incorporating aspects of psychology, genetics, chemistry, engineering, computation and philosophy to further our understanding of how the brain works in health and disease

Who is involved in the Brain Domain?

The project is managed by a dedicated team of early career neuroscience researchers based at Cardiff University, each with diverse backgrounds and interests. Our writers are often neuroscience researchers but we also encourage article submissions from anyone with experience in neuroscience, whether you have a scientific background or not! We are particularly keen to hear from healthcare professionals and people with personal experiences of mental health or neurological conditions.
